Happy Pride week…
The city is bustling with colourful rainbow flags, and people frockling scantily clad in the streets. Its all about celebrating “pride” within the city and its great.
I have went to a couple of Pride events in the past and met some wonderful people. This week there has been party after party, day after day.
One interesting thing I noticed this year is the overindulgence of Madonna. Is Madonna all that is gay? I mean she is not the only one… is she? Since when has Madonna been such a gay icon?
I know the whole erotica and sexploitation thing she had going on in the early 90s made her mark, but this whole week has been all Madonna. 3 different Madonna-thons, Madonna drag contest, Madonna parties, Dress you up in Madonna. We get it already. It just seems like pure madness. I mean what about gay and lesbian singers?
During the 80s it was real hard for me to tell who was a homosexual. Everyone had this androgynous look. Boy George, KD Lang (who I found out was a woman after her career was over) oh and that guy that the Rev. Sheen is infatuated with from “You Spin Me Right Round… Like a record baby”
Now looking back at some of the music videos… there are so many SUSPECT individuals. Even a few that I am still in denial… Don’t come up in here talking about Luther or Maxwell… I will fight you!
Well here are a couple of videos in honor of Pride Week….
Enjoy!
Love HIM!

Ice Cream, Ice Cream
I was driving home from work listening to the radio when this song came on. It by far was the oddest thing I have ever heard. The singer started rambling about how much he loved ice cream and the different flavours. Eating so much ice cream until his "belly must bust". At first I was annoyed with the atrocity of it and that rush hour traffic never seems to end; then I started to laugh, how absurd. But as the song played further it started to formulate into something.
The name of the song is "Junkfood" and it wasn't until it was over that I thought I should have paid more attention to it, maybe it was really about something. So I when I got home I googled it, took awhile to find, but here it is.
http://www.mutabaruka.com/junkfood.htm
Independent artist and dub poet Mutabaruka, apparently this song was done in '96 and 12 years later it's my first time hearing it.
The beat to the song is real raw, sounds like the clanking of tin cans and a synth are the only things supporting his vocals. But after taking another listen to it without any distractions, I have come to appreciate the song.
Mutabaruka paints a nostalgic picture of a granny's good home cooked meals and dumpling and ackee, stew peas and rice. All the good stuff, until one day an ice cream stand moves in and takes over and it's all about ice cream and how everyone wants it. Kind of reminds me of the Ice Cream fashion apparel (BBC). The ice cream stand replicates the American dream and how it has tarnished all the good that once was.
Clever...

Let Me Whimper In Your Ear
Someone, ANYONE needs to help me make sense of this! This seems to be the month of LilWayne, but PLEASE tell me what he is saying?!
There is no denying that he is commercial hip-hop music this summer. Can’t say I am a fan of his, but I have been jamming to the beat and not hearing a word.
Is this what music has come to!? I know I am not the only one that feels that way… and I can find the justification in it having no real substance because it's pop music. But I am sorry, where are the words. Or words aren’t necessary in pop music today? I happen to like the Lollipop, but other than… “lick it like a lollipop” and “let me make it juicy for you” I don’t here anything else. Go figure. Trust me when I say that LilWayne is not the only one guilty of this. Before him there was Britney and Janet. Now Janet is a hot mess with all of that raspiness. I am a Janet fan, but since Renee left the building so has her ability to form non-whimpering words.
What is all this nonsensically rubbish? Or am I just making too much of this? But wouldn’t it be nice to have some words to sing to as you’re bopping to the tune. Wouldn’t it?

Buddy X
An old ‘friend’ of mine and I have been exchanging YouTube videos with classic material. What started out as a friendly exchange of “oh you remember this video” has turned into “you can’t top this”. This outlandish competitive behaviour has brought out the possessive psycho music-freak in me.
Of course I win everytime… hands down. I can’t be touched. I have brought out everything from classic Simply Red to Herb Alpert, Michael McDonald ( I heart him) to Chris Cross (not the fools that missed the bus!), Digable Planets to X-Clan, Lisa Lisa to Jermaine Stewart (he is so precious), Duran Duran to Neneh Cherry.
YES NENEH CHERRY! What is with everyone?! I don’t get it. Neneh Cherry is the ILLEST thing to come out since Vietnamese Pho!
She epitomizes what woman in music should sound like… I can rock Buffalo Stance and Woman like it just came out yesterday. Homebrew by far has the be one of the best female albums that came out in ‘92 and people are acting like its on an average scale. Portishead "Dummy" was done and released by her production company, and she collaborated on Massive Attack's "Blue Lines"... there is more to her than meets the eye. Haters!!! YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!? Show some appreciation. Take a listen and pay close attention.
And to my delight she is coming out with some new material.
Marinate on these videos and tell me I don’t know what I am talking about….
No Money Man Can Win My LOVE.......!!!!!!!
It's a WOMAN'S WORLD
This one is dedicated to ME! Love this one...
